My students are ages four and five and are attending Developmental Kindergarten which is a new program in our district. They are curious and energetic learners. Much of my students' learning is done through play. They are in constant motion and extremely interested in learning about the world around them.
My students learn best when they are engaged in interesting, hands-on activities.
They are very active and benefit greatly from activities that allow them to move and/or manipulate objects and materials. Although they can have short attentions spans, high-interest play activities can keep them engaged and learning for long periods of time.
My Project
My students love to play. Play is the work of childhood. They love to explore things in new and unique ways. As we lined-up outdoors on a sunny day in October, my students were delighted to see their shadows in a line on the ground. Watching their curiosity and excitement in this moment reminded me how fun learning is for them at this age. They experience great joy with each new discovery. A light table in our classroom would allow them to see items in a new *light* and spark that joy on daily basis!
A light table would keep my young students engaged in learning as they explore things from a new perspective.
My students will be able to use translucent shapes to make pictures and compose new shapes. They will be able to construct figures using unique building materials that will let the light shine through. They can use a translucent alphabet to learn letters and sounds, spell their names, and spell sight words. They will also be able to use the table for tracing letters and figures. We will also be able to use the light table as a window into our own bodies by exploring x-rays.
My students will have so many opportunities for discovery with a light table. It will allow them a unique sensory experience that will enhance their learning in so many ways. This project will not only benefit my students this year, but also all the students I will have in the years to come. I am so excited for the possibilities!
