My students from Centerville, Ohio, are part of a literacy support program that helps struggling readers and writers gain the needed skills and strategies to become confident, independent learners.
Our students are enthusiastic, love to learn, have loads of potential, are diverse in many ways, and have some unique needs that keep me striving for fun and meaningful ways to accelerate their growth in reading and writing.
I thoroughly enjoy helping to foster a love of reading and writing that will benefit them for a lifetime.
My Project
Emergent readers are taking in a lot of visual information all at once. In order to help them remember, children need to see, hear, and feel letters and words in many different ways. Our brains are more likely to remember when more of our senses are involved.
I have chosen the LED message board and letter tracers with my at-risk students in mind and hope to use them to practice skills in isolation, then in text, in order to develop an understanding of the important relationship between reading and writing.
Bright colors on the message board, as well as the glow in the dark option, will motivate students to write letters, words, sentences and more. Using the message board and books together, will help me show students the connection between reading and writing. Sandpaper letters will help provide a tactile way for their hands, eyes, and brain to work together to help remember letters.
Using the LED board and letter tracers, I will be able to provide just the right amount of support and challenge so that each child is offered an opportunity to learn and strengthen skills in a fun . I believe that preventing literacy difficulties early in a child's school career can help a child reach his or her full potential as a learner. It is my goal to decrease the chance of the achievement gap widening for at-risk students in later grades by offering letter and word work that will engage students and help them to become more competent, independent, strategic readers and writers.
