"There is a single light of science, and to brighten it anywhere is to brighten it everywhere," Isaac Asimov said, and my students are looking to spark their curiosity, imagination, and love of science.
I teach in a preschool special education inclusion classroom in Nevada.
My students are energetic, inquisitive, and absolutely adorable. They LOVE being at school, exploring the world around them and learning new things. It is just a little more difficult for my students because many have developmental delays and need hands-on materials to help them access the curriculum.
My Project
Children are naturally curious about the world and want to find out as much as they can. They want to know what makes the wind blow, how trees grow, why fish have fins, and where turtles go in the winter. But they do not always want adults to give them the answers. They want to be the discoverers, the experimenters, and the theory builders. Light boxes create a place for careful observation or for exploring pattern, shape, form, color, opacity and color mixing. The calming influence of a light box invites sensory exploration and engages children's attention for long periods of time.
"Spontaneous sciencing occurs whenever a child (or a teacher) sees something of interest and wonders about it" (Kilmer & Hofman, 1995, p.
55).
Your support of this project will help my students experience the joy of having wonderful ideas; that is, the joy of finding out.
Thank you for your help!
