Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students come to me from many different and difficult home situations. Despite where they are coming from, I focus on making the classroom a community and family while at school.

We have recently become a STEM school and need supplies to start adapting our lessons.

Many of my students excel in science because it is hands on and inquiry based! By providing more versatile science materials we can investigate our wonders with more precision.

They are eager and willing to learn and work hard, as long as they are respected, recognized and rewarded.

My Project

STEM should be part of our daily lives! However, many of my students do not have the background knowledge to ask the questions I know they all have. These materials will give the students hands on experiences that will ignite their interest in exploring science.

Light is a key concept in fifth grade and these supplies will catapult the student thinking!

Students will be able to use these supplies to visualize the meanings behind the articles they read. Using the light boxes and mirrors students will be able to make connections with the process by which light energy travels. The black lights and color boxes can also help explain and explore the visual color spectrum. It can also help them investigate the parts they need clarification on. How do light waves travel? Using the kaleidoscope glasses and various mirrors, students will see how light travels in straight lines but can be reflected, refracted or absorbed.

By providing these supplies for my students, you are helping LIGHT the way for their future as members of our society.
