Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in one of the highest poverty areas of our city. It is also a high crime area. My students take on many responsibilities at home than most 5th grade students would never understand. Our school is a Title 1 school, so the majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch.
I teach a class of 5th grade girls who are full of life and a love for learning.
My students represent a wide variety of ability levels and socioeconomic backgrounds. Three of my students receive special education services due to a learning disability. Eight of my students receive ESOL services, and Spanish is the predominant language spoken at home. Two of my students receive Gifted and Talented services. The different ability levels is a challenge. My girls are full of life and have a desire to succeed in life.
Our school is located in the middle of one of the highest crime rates and highest number of members meeting the requirements breakfast, lunch, and weekend assistance with food. However, our school has a very high number of teachers with the highly qualified status, as well as a love for each of our students and a desire to see them succeed in all areas of life. We strive on a daily basis to meet all of their needs, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socioeconomically.
My Project
Kindle Fires in my classroom will enhance Guided Reading Instruction as well as offer many more opportunities for my students to embrace technology and reading in the classroom. The Kindle Fire has many applications that will improve how my students take a more active responsibility in their own learning experiences on a daily basis. Students will have easy access to e-books with the use of Kindle Fires, that will enhance our Reading to Self and Listening to Reading parts of our Daily 5 Literacy program. Reading is not the only part of our curriculum that will benefit from the use of Kindle Fires in the classroom. There are applications for Math instruction (Geo boards for Geometry, practice applications for multiplication and division facts, and many other ways to implement our math center activities through the use of the Kindle Fires), we will also use the Kindle Fires for our research projects throughout the year as well as Spelling City for practicing our spelling words.
Donations to my Light Up Our World with Kindle Fires, will put technology in the hands of each of my students on a daily basis.
No more checking out a tablet lab, and no more waiting to schedule the computer lab for my class to use computers. Technological skills are a necessity in today's world and definitely a part of their future. Kindle Fires would offer many opportunities for these students that they do not get at home, and it will afford me opportunities to differentiate instruction.
