Biology is a required subject. Marine Biology and Environmental Studies is an elective advanced field science course.
I try to motivate students by engaging with the world about them.
Some have never even looked around the outside world!
They love getting outside and are generally excited about learning science and the natural world we live in. Students are more motivated when I combine hands-on science learning and apply to real-world concepts. I love place-based learning and STEM projects to get them engaged.
I recently moved to a new high school, our school is on the Oregon coast. I want to eventually get 14 aquariums in my classroom, that students can be assigned to take-care of, monitor the nitrogen cycle, and ensure their ecosystem is balanced. These four aquarium hoods with lights will help me complete that goal.
By learning how to balance and care for their aquatic ecosystem, they are learning about different biological, chemical and physiological cycles.
They will learn about eutrophication, aquatic systems and relate what is happening in their tank to the bigger world and environment. Having aquariums in the classroom is a highly engaging STEM project, but unfortunately, very expensive. With your help, I can make this happen at my new school.
