Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all "Students with Interrupted Formal Education" who live in Boston. They range from third graders to fifth graders. My students have faced numerous struggles in order to get to where they are today. Unfortunately, they still have many struggles ahead of them. My students must not only acclimate to being in a school setting again, but they also must learn a foreign language. Can you imagine what it would feel like to be immersed in a language that you do not know? My students live that every day.
My students are dedicated to bettering themselves through their education, and they work tremendously hard every day to succeed in a country where they do not speak the language.
My job is to make their job easier, and to guide them to be the best that they can be.
My Project
My students need a light table, sensory activities, translucent letters, and nature tiles to really light up their minds and engage them in their learning! My students need all the help they can get in order to help them reach grade level. This means that they need a variety of different modes of learning within our classroom to spark their interest and keep them engaged in their learning.
My students come into school every day ready and eager to learn to read.
I want to provide them with every opportunity I can to make sure that their learning is fun. A light table will make it so that their learning is almost like playing. The sensory activities will allow them to use their fingers to trace letters and sight words, and then mix them back up and start over to write new words! With the translucent letters, my students can write words on the table and watch the vibrant colors shine through them. Students can also use the colored, translucent letters to experiment with patterns! The nature tiles will allow my students to have exposure to scientific concepts in the classroom. Students can look at the tiles and use scientific concepts to make predictions about what they think each tile is. We can then use it as a learning opportunity to see if their predictions were correct!
