Light Up Our Library! Gear for a 21st Century Learning Space
My students need an accurate globe, display lighting, signs, art supplies, and other resources to illuminate all of their learning and projects in their library MakerSpace!
Our library is the heart of the school, often packed wall-to-wall with students who love it's energetic atmosphere and opportunities to learn and play. However, it needs to be brightened up with some lighting, signage, supplies, and teaching tools!
My students are an amazing, enthusiastic, diverse group of over 1,000 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.
We have students who are just learning English and students who are taking advanced high school math, students winning national art contests and students with significant special needs, students who have well-conceived plans to be President one day and students who just love to quietly read a book. Our school loves to learn and explore, and so much of that happens in its heart -- our library!
My Project
With the resources from this grant, we will be able to build and enjoy eye-catching displays of student artwork, thematic books, and event promotions. We will be able to learn more about our world with an up-to-date globe and have fireside chats and read-alouds at our little fireplace. We will create announcements and masterpieces with art supplies and projection boards, and archive/share them on a large digital picture frame. We will add giant chess to our well-loved game collection and celebrate our victories with displays and maybe even impromptu mini-dance parties!
Our students pack the library to overflowing and love its resources, even the globe -- which is broken in half and features the USSR -- and our dimly-lit displays.
A new globe will help them better understand their world. These display lights will bring life to dark corners. New signs and art supplies help students and staff interact. Accents and updates to the library, like a miniature fireplace or an oversized chess set, will truly make this space a HOME within our school.
