Help me give my students a fun and engaging math and literacy center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, very spontaneous, full of personality and energy.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Several of students also face the challenges that come along with learning and/or physical disabilities. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By inspiring my students in a creative and positive way, I hope to lay foundations of academic excellence.
My students favorite part of the day is literacy and math centers. However, sometimes the same centers can get boring and students can lose focus. There are only so many different ways to practice spelling and sight words or even math skills. With the 4 light tablets, students would become engaged in their center activity, that I believe the problem would be getting them to stop working! What a great problem to have! In 2nd grade, getting as much practice with different spelling patterns only increase their reading and writing success. The same in true of learning math skills including shape recognition, number sense, addition and subtraction with manipulatives. These are necessary skills to have as they will begin to learn how to identify 2 and 3 dimensional shapes as well as begin to multiply. My goal as a teacher is always to have engaging and relevant activities that my students will connect to and have a desire to take an active role in their learning.
By donating to our project, will not only help to improve and increase student attention and engagement, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at the light table center, and not weather they have already done the same center activity all year.
My school is a magnet school for the Arts. With 4 light tablets, my students would be able to make their artwork come to life. The possibilities with their creativity and the exploration with light, shape and color are endless. Student who are reluctant to create art because they think they lack talent or ability, will be able to put their fears aside and use the light tablet to boost their confidence.
