My Students

Our middle school has students from grades 6-8.

The students who attend our urban school come from many different cultural backgrounds and speak many different languages.

About 35% of our students are English Language Learners. We have students who speak Spanish, Hmong, Arabic, Mandinka, Pashto, Lao, Yoruba, French, and more. Our school motto is "One school, many cultures."

More than 70% of our students are low income and we have many creative teachers who make it work with limited resources.

My Project

Each quarter, we celebrate our students' hard work with behavior and academics with a school dance. When students have good self-esteem and feel like they belong at school, they learn more!

Due to budget cuts, we can no longer afford to hire a professional DJ for our dances, so ours consists of a teacher's playlist on an iPad and dimmed fluorescent lighting... not so exciting for middle school students.

These laser lights will help increase the fun atmosphere of the dance by making it feel a little different from the normal gymnasium where they have physical education class. We will also be able to use the projector to display positive photos of students to celebrate their achievements.
