Maria Montessori said, “the goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn.” My group of developmentally delayed preschool children who are three and four years old is such an exciting group with mixed interests, abilities that love to be immersed in new experiences. Our classroom community focuses on building social skills, independence, and a love for learning. My students being their educational journey in my classroom where we are part of a larger school community that they will remain with for years to come. We work hard every day and always celebrate the small wins together.
Our students learn about the world around them in various ways. A light table center can be used to enhance literacy, math, and pre-writing skills in a fun playful way. Kids are naturally drawn to the gentle glow of the light table and will stay there for long periods of time, which is great for stretching those budding attention spans. A light table can be used by every student regardless of their developmental level to engage in open-ended play, arts, and crafts, or small group social skills concepts with a teacher.
