My Students
I teach in a Developmental Kindergarten classroom in Portland, Michigan. My experiences working with students ages early 5 - 6 years have led me to believe being part of a calm and cozy environment is necessary for students to feel good and allows them to learn best. I love teaching DK because I get to help foster a love for learning within my students and also create a positive school experience for many of them during their first official year.
My Project
The stark appearance of school atmospheres and harsh fluorescent lighting that is unnatural can really impact young learners without our realizing.
Minimizing the often overpowering overhead lighting and utilizing soft light can alter a child's perception of the classroom, as well as give their brains just the right amount of stimulation to learn.
Research has proven that improved lighting increases students' ability to focus and maintain a sense of calm.
I have chosen to create a project that will provide ceiling covers for fluorescent lights and purchase lamps for soft up-lighting. They will be used in combination to create a learning environment that fits with young children's needs.
