Hello! I am the lucky teacher of a fifth grade classroom at Painter Elementary School in San Jose, California (an inner city school in an under-resourced district). Our classroom is an amazing space full of incredibly bright, amazingly curious and wonderfully creative children.
Reading is the cornerstone of learning. Being a good reader enables us to explore and enjoy any subject we wish. Unfortunately, the days when a book was picked up before a remote control or video game controller are slipping away.
However, there is a flame that can be lit within the minds of children that brings books back to life. How can we light this flame? Read GOOD books with children! Help kids realize that books are dynamic, hilarious, entertaining, and utilize their imagination in a way they have never known to be possible! Thus far in the school year, we have read several books as a classroom that have began the process of lighting this flame for the children. By giving voices to characters when we read aloud, creating artwork using different mediums of images relayed by the author, and even acting out complicated or humorous scenes, the books have come to life before the children. The children are increasingly interested, increasingly hungry for new books, and become better readers each day.
Unfortunately, our parents and school district cannot afford to buy class sets of these wonderful books necessary to keep the children's hunger for books alive, which is why I am reaching out to willing donors like you for help. The next book that I would like the children to dive into with your help is "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." I hope my students will not only enjoy this wonderful book, but I also hope that it will be a catalyst to spur the children to read the rest of the series.
The materials necessary for this ongoing project are one teachers guide and thirty-four copies of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," which will enable each student to read both in class and at their homes. The experience of reading this book will not only keep the literary flame alive within the children in the classroom, but will also promote creativity, imagination and higher order thinking skills through extension activities. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our need!
