I am so lucky and thankful to be a part of Girls Rock Science - An after-school program that encourages and empowers females to explore the field of science. Our town is a small urban community. Most of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We have very limited supplies for the classrooms and none for after-school programs.
We provide STEM and STEAM lessons for the girls in the program and encourage team work.
The lessons are designed to build self-esteem and engage females in science. It is powerful to see how the girls embrace each activity and see how they grow and blossom through out the year. It motivates me and our team to plan and prepare our girls to succeed and reach their highest potential.
My Project
For this STEAM project, the girls will utilize the science of electric circuits to create light up hand puppets. They will use ordinary paper lunch bags, LED diode lights, copper tape, brass fasteners, and a battery to create a circuit.
The girls apply the science of electric circuits to the design of their real-life project.
When the brass fasteners are connected the lights will turn on and their puppets come to life.
They can then use their creativity and crafts like pom-poms, googly eyes, and feathers to decorate their puppets.
The students then present their puppets and explain how they created the circuit.
