Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school where the majority of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school is located in one of the most diverse cities in the country and our students come from all different backgrounds; students in our school speak over 45 different languages at home. 100% of our students gain acceptance to college.
Our students come from loving families, but families who might not know how to navigate the road to higher education.
Teachers, coaches, and peers step in to support and enrich both academics and personal development. Our students are enthusiastic and hard-working and all of the classes offered in our school are either Honors or Advanced Placement classes.
My Project
Every student walks around with the ability to create a movie--using the phone in their pocket. McNair has a popular film study elective, and in the course, students learn the basics of cinematography. Lighting gear (soft boxes, barn door lights and reflective throws) is relatively inexpensive, yet makes an enormous difference in the technical experience of shooting (more accurate to what cinematographers do) and also creates a more polished and watchable product. A few years ago, a parent donated a very simple three-point lighting set of softboxes that I maintained for lending to whomever wished to use them. Those lights have been in constant use (and are starting to reach end of life) and have been used for live events, photography, and video projects. There is a demand to use the lights, we need to replace and enhance our gear.
Having a mix of lights allows students to experiment with color temperature, directional lighting, contrast, hard/soft pictorial lighting, and to recreate the look of images they see.
We may even have enough lights that students can set up a few backdrops and shoot out of sequence or do A unit and B unit, which would further increase their technical ability. Long story short, the lights create opportunities for experimentation and craft in student video projects.
