Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are freshmen in a co-taught biology classroom. This means that there are two teachers and a percentage of the students in the room are students with special needs.
A few of our students are autistic and require extra love and support to be successful in the general education classroom.
One thing that causes stress and over-stimulation are the lights.
Some of our other students have a lot of extra energy and need an engaging way to use that energy in the classroom! They come in eager to learn; however, sometimes their energy and daily struggles affect their learning.
My students love learning, love their school, love their teachers; but they are students who need a different setting than other students do.
My Project
Currently our classroom has the strong fluorescent lights on the ceiling. The lights are very bright and overbearing, especially for the students who have sensory issues. Some students leave the classroom or the school day with headaches, and that is because of the constant use of fluorescent lights.
The lights are so bright that the students are constantly begging us to turn them off.
This is not always possible because some of the students need the light to be able to see.
The light filters will reduce the fluorescent feel in the classroom and create a better learning environment. The soft-white filter will still create an environment that encourages learning, but not one that causes sensory issues or headaches for students.
