Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into my classroom you don't feel like you are in a high school classroom, you feel like you have entered a community art studio. Students come in collect their supplies and materials, get their sketchbooks, and their projects and start working. I try to instill in my students they are artists when they enter the studio and after the first week of school my students/artists personify that ideal. My student/artists are always looking for ways to express their unique abilities. Artists like to experiment and be creative on many different levels, some love to sketch, create beautiful 2D illustrations or 3D the sculptures. I want my students only limits to be their imagination not their access to supplies. It is really important to me for my students experiment with unusual media and techniques for their art projects. Many of my students have incredible ideas for everything from wearable sculpture to photography to photo realistic illustration. This project will give them the supplies necessary to move forward with their ideas if they choose to. Most of my students would never have the opportunity to learn art using the materials in this project with out the funding you provide.
Let’s be honest, if you’re sitting in front of a clean, quality sheet of paper and expecting to create a finished piece right off the bat, you’re going to get stressed out. When a student's brain gets in "it must look perfect" mode before they even start, they probably don’t even notice how tense they get, they can get kind of a goofy, tense expression, or just give up before they start. The perfect blank paper makes them think to much. That is why we work in our sketchbook first. Students can improvise and let their ideas float onto paper without much thought of making "mistakes." The light tables will allow my students the freedom to quickly put their ideas on paper without worry, transfer over their own sketches, or elements from other reference material, and create amazing illustrations. Professionals use them all the time. It helps them work quickly.
In Their Own Words
I want to learn how to draw!
Tracing with a Light Box is a great way to get a head start on learning to draw. It's the simplest way to getting something on your paper quickly and accurately. Drawing can be hard and stressful when Ms. S passes out the big beautiful drawing paper. Using a light table will help me transfer my ideas to the paper from my sketch book. I can learn to draw things that seemed to hard by transferring textures or designs from magazines.
Learning art forces students to be creative. Creativity is not just about expressing yourself, it is about problem solving, risk taking and having the confidence to put your idea out into the world. Peer pressure doesn't just go away as you grow up, creating art helps you to learn how to take chances, not just express your ideas, but listen to what people think of them. Artists are inventors, pioneers, and fearless, these are all qualities that make great leaders!
I think that students give up to easily when learning the basics when it comes to drawing. Everyone thinks it is easy and it just isn't easy. Some students get frustrated, some give up. Everyone can make something beautiful, and having a light table will make struggling students less likely to give up. Right now when someone gets frustrated, Ms. S. tells them to go to the window and trace from their sketchbook. But that really hard, and you have to stand where the whole class can see what you are doing, which if you are already stressed out about drawing will make you more stressed out. Just being able to grab a light table and sit at our seat would be so much better.
