I have always been passionate about reading, and I want to share that passion with my students. The reading experience provided by a Kindle Fire tablet can be the spark that ignites the love of reading in my reluctant readers.
My students are a wonderful mix of first and second graders from diverse backgrounds.
They attend a Title One school in an otherwise affluent neighborhood. Their peers across town enjoy abundant resources, both at home and at school. This widens the achievement gap that exists in our town between our school and the other elementary schools. Our outstanding PTO provides us with as much as they can, but they simply don't have the funds to buy us everything we feel our students need.
My Project
I totally believe that electronic readers should be considered in literacy programs. For some students, it will actually increase motivation (light that fire!) and help with basic skills such as developing oral skills (with the talk feature) and vocabulary skills. Also, in the case of nonfiction, it allows students to step away briefly from reading to do quick research on a topic or help provide students with some background knowledge. These would be amazing tools in helping us to close that ever present achievement gap.
Kindle Fire tablets will allow my students to take their reading experience to the next level.
A Kindle provides instant access to a dictionary that the reader can access with minimal interruption to their flow of reading. The Kindle Fire tablet will also provide access to the Internet when students are researching a topic. Most importantly, for some, it will be the spark that ignites that lifelong love of learning. Won't you please help me to light that fire for my students?
