I need to go to this professional development so that I can learn the skills of teaching yoga to kids.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has nearly 700 student attending, we are a Title I school. We primarily have students who are English Language Learners. Many students have recently immigrated from Mexico or have parents who moved here before they were born. Many students have had a very traumatic childhood, loved ones being deported, homelessness, living in extreme poverty or victims of domestic abuse.
One student wrote in a letter to me "As a child, my grandma wouldn't allow me to go outside because of the monsters, I later on found out what she meant was drug dealers and gangs." These children have grown up living in situations that I can't even imagine facing.
What they have seen, been a part of and heard are things that we protect our loved ones from seeing. These kids, live, breathe and are children in home environments that we would never want to see children living in.
The stress, trauma and hurt that they feel overflows into our classrooms every day. We have students who come to school without supplies, without a full belly, without clean clothes, with the thoughts of possible deportation of themselves and loved ones and then expect them to behave and learn.
My Project
I am requesting money so that I can go on a professional development that will help enable me to bring yoga to my school. I hope to bring yoga and mindfulness to school so that students can help themselves to manage their stress and anxiety. Many of them are so traumatized that they struggle to complete their work in a classroom setting. My hope is that through yoga, we will be able to give students more tools to be successful in school and in life.
In addition to offering yoga to students I also hope to offer yoga classes to fellow teachers and the rest of the school community.
So many teachers take on the stress of their students and do not have the ability or time to manage their stress, which is detrimental to both their physical and mental health. Yoga and mindfulness would provide them with the opportunity to cope with the stresses of their job.
My goal is to eventually expand this program to include surrounding schools in West Sacramento within the Washington Unified School District. I have created a Donors Choose campaign to help raise money for my cause--LiftEducation. I am looking to eventually raise funds to launch this program at my school and my campaign will help me raise a portion of that money.
