This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many people have very fond memories of their first days of school. New school clothes and backpacks filled with brand new school supplies. But this is not the case for most of my students, who often arrive with no school supplies at all on the first day of school.
While my students are excited about learning, highly motivated, and engaged in the learning process, many of them come to school with little to none of the necessary school supplies needed to be successful in high school, as well as in my classroom.
Although my students lack the necessary supplies, this does not change the class expectations. I believe that students do better in a highly engaged active classroom with a lot of interaction from student-to-text, student-to-student, student-to-teacher and student-to-audience.
My Project
I believe that a life-long habit of reading begins with readers having an option in what they read, being presented with opportunities to challenge themselves as readers, and encouragement to make reading part of their daily life. With independent reading as the backbone of my English classroom, these texts will give my students more opportunities to be inspired with a love of books.
My current classroom library is small, but as it continues to grow I see more and more students reaching for books on their own and recommending texts to their friends.
This list of books was developed by both the students and myself as we set out to create our dream library.
These additions will go straight in the hands of learners and continue to serve my students for years to come.
