At my school, I have 150 students in my high school physical education classes as well as my fitness and conditioning class. One of my goals for the future of my physical education program is to provide them with opportunities to learn about life long physical fitness. These students are more than willing to dive in headfirst to tackle new activities. Students in this area do not regularly have the opportunity to learn about the many different ways to stay physically active. The low socioeconomic status of our area plays a huge roll in the students' view of physical activity outside of school. The focus for these students at home is not on physical health, but on the lower three levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It is my goal to show them an improved quality of life through being active and healthy.
My classes are filled with students who are eager to learn and try new activities!
These students are more capable of reaching their potential in any activity that they try as they possess a multitude of character traits that contribute to their success such as perseverance, dedication, and commitment to giving their best effort!
My Project
High school physical education should facilitate lifelong physical activity skills for students who are about to be in charge of their personal health within the next few years. The main goal in my class is to teach students about ways they can be physically healthy outside of athletics in the future. Luckily, my school has a weight room with many different pieces of equipment for students to use. However, due to years of use and lack of funding, some of the equipment is quite literally being held together with tape. Not only does this issue cause safety to come into question, but it also deters students from attempting a new activity. Our weight room has the potential to impact my students' physical fitness knowledge and skills in a positive manner. My goal with this equipment is to introduce students to a variety of new activities that incorporate the four components of fitness—cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.
By providing students with safe equipment to use in the weight room, the potential of increasing active learning drastically improves.
My hope is that the students will be willing to continue implementing the skills they learn far into their future to maintain and improve their personal health. With the students investing in their own physical health, I hope that they can begin to help change the mindset of those around them when it comes to physical health.
