I teach at a Title I School located in an urban area of a major northeastern city. 85% of the student population is economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. Because of the financial crisis our state faces in education, it is a huge challenge to acquire the necessary educational, classroom materials my students need to succeed and learn. Also, they do not have the resources at home to help them learn reading and literacy skills. 47% of the students are English Language Learners, which makes it a challenge for them to learn basic reading skills. Most of these children come from homes where English is rarely or never spoken. This creates a challenge for me as I teach early literacy skills.
My Project
As a new teacher to my grade and school, as well as returning to the profession after being a stay at home mom; I lack the finances to provide a variety of literacy center activities for my students that they deserve. These literacy centers will change my students' lives for the better because they will be able to learn their letters and sounds, as well as begin to read sight words and write simple sentences through reading, writing, and basic literacy skills that are key components to creating successful literacy learners. They will also be able to engage in small group literacy centers that will help them identify, spell, and create sight words from tactile pieces. By being able to learn and work with letters and sight words, my students will become more knowledgeable and experience a love of learning as every child should.
