Lifelong Literacy Learners: Building a Classroom Library

My students need high-interest engaging novels to help them develop a love of reading.

My Students

It always seems to be that being smart isn't "cool." It is a teacher's job to combat that stigma and encourage students to embrace their "coolness." Creating a lifelong love of literacy in the classroom combats this stigma. It is my goal to make literacy 'cool' through embracing reading in class.

My students attend a 6-8 middle school in rural Missouri.

They come from a variety of backgrounds, socio-economically, racial, and academic levels. In my classroom specifically, I teach 8th grade English. My students have a variety of academic needs, ranging from IEP and ELL students to students that are far above grade level.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of high-interest fiction novels to help build my classroom library, including Mosquitoland, Undertow, The Hunger Games series, Every Last Word, and more. I strongly believe that in an English classroom students should have ready access to all genres of books. By just having novels in the classroom, students see that a literary environment is being fostered. My students will have time each day to independently read a book of their choosing. Having novels accessible in the classroom allows students more time to read, by not having to go to the library to select a book each time. By setting aside time each day in class to read, my students learn how important reading is in their everyday lives and how much of a positive impact it can create to their grades in every class, not just English, as strong literacy skills are a key component to succeeding academically.

Donating to my classroom library will help create a literary environment in my classroom.

Studies have proved that when students have ready access to books, not just in the library, that they are more apt to read on their own accord. Getting students to read is the first step in creating a lifelong love of reading. A love of reading can help all students succeed academically, as language is the key component to every subject.
