This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My fifth grade students are brilliant, caring, and hilarious. They love to tell stories and make up their own jokes, ask deep questions, and learn about the world. Fifth grade is such a cool age where students have a growing awareness about the world around them and start to ask the big questions.
Despite the rough circumstances that life has handed many of them, my students are strong and resilient.
When the work gets hard, some get discouraged, but others are there to boost them up and they all push through together. At our school everyone (staff, admin, students) is 'family,' and it rings true in the community in my classroom too. They are 'my kids' and we support each other like members of a family.
I look up to my fifth graders (some of them literally might pass me by in height this year) and learn from them every day.
They are intelligent readers, leaders, scientists, and mathematicians. I hope to help them discover their identities as lifelong learners and change-makers. The future is so bright!
My Project
The books on this list will give me a better understanding of OUR American history, beyond the white-centered version I learned when I went through school. I love my job because I can embrace being a lifelong learner alongside my students. I never stop learning, so neither should they.
If I can gain a deeper and better understanding of our social studies content, I will be able to teach my students in a way that is more meaningful and representative of their lives, cultural background, and ancestors.
Some of the books I will be able to directly share with my students, other books will guide me in creating materials and content based on our learning.
There are also materials that will help us learn, reflect, and cope with this pandemic and how to best teach and learn through Distance Learning. This is layered on top of the movement for Black lives that is directly impacting the community that I serve here in Minneapolis.
We need more educators focusing on anti-bias and anti-racist work, so help me lead the way by funding this project and assisting me with bettering myself! In doing so, you will have influence in shaping a better future through these incredible future leaders!
