I teach in the only high school in my county. I have a mix of students from a variety of backgrounds. My students come into my classes with every interest level in history there is. Some of my students love history while others find it very boring, but my task is to reach all of them.
I had a former student tell me that not only was I a major influence on her desire to learn more about history, but on her desire to become a life-long learner.
To me, that is why I teach. I want my students to learn about history, but more importantly I want them to learn about life, I just use history to let them learn it. I also want them to learn about themselves and the responsibility we all have to each other.
I feel my subject is better than any movie or television show. Why? Because what I talk about, what I give my students the chance to learn about is life, real life, real people, and the things that make us who we are today.
My Project
I am asking for help to pay for my travel expenses to attend a Holocaust Seminar to continue my education into the Holocaust. I have been passionate about this my whole life and 10 years ago my passion took on a new form as I began to teach about this horrific event.
This trip will allow me to visit places I have only read about and to share these experiences with every student that I will teach for the rest of my career.
I will never forget the power of standing at Mt Vernon and looking across the Potomac River. The overwhelming emotion of being able to walk where other people walked and touch the things they touched is something I want to be able to let my students experience through me. Many of them will not have the opportunity to visit these places, so I want to be able to share all of my experiences with them.
This is a trip of a lifetime for me and I thank everyone who considers assisting me.
