Progress in my classroom always happens in baby steps, never in giant leaps. I teach a special education class for students with emotional disturbance in northeast Los Angeles. My students are a very energetic bunch who deep down inside have a strong desire to learn, to progress, and to overcome the many obstacles that impede them from achieving their full potential. They love to be helpful, they enjoy learning by doing, and they love to laugh. They also struggle with many challenges that impact their progress in school, their ability to develop strong and meaningful relationships with others, and to become that person that they want to be in life. They all have serious emotional and behavioral challenges, along with other disorders including severe ADHD and mood disorders. At the end of the day, these students, despite their disability and struggles in life, want to learn, want to feel included, want to be treated like everyone else, and want to be successful. They just need the tools, the supports, and the confidence to be able to achieve greatness.
My Project
A while back, a generous donation of two microscopes was made to my class, and my students are loving the opportunity to see so many interesting things up close as one can only see through a microscope. Although the kits came with a few prepared slides, there are many other types of specimens that I would like them to be able to view and examine, including a variety of plant, animal, and other specimens. A generous donation of these slides like the blood and guts one, or the creepy crawlies one, will be a wonderful addition to our current science supplies and a unique learning experience for my students as they see their world up close.
