My Students
I teach math and science to 6th graders in an urban, bilingual English-Spanish immersion school. I also teach a Black Girl Magic class as part of an Avid College Success program that provides academic and enrichment experiences to 7th and 8th grade young Black women.
My students are incredible.
They live in the increasingly unaffordable and alienating city of San Francisco. They come to school every day, ready to learn and asking tough questions about the world around them.
On a daily basis I hold a community circle to ground students in the beginning of class. This allows them time to think and converse through anything from situations happening in class, school, their communities and our world. Through this practice, I have learned how open-minded and what change-makers they are and will be.
My Project
Life through Succulents is a way to build community and develop an appreciation for the life sciences and nature. The students will decorate a personal pot to represent their identity and values. The opening to the project will give each class a basis for connecting and establishing relationships through initial sharing and expression. Then, we will plant the succulents. The students will use scientific sketches, accurate labels and graphing to describe and depict their plants then chart the growth in scientific notebook. The succulents project will open up avenues for us as a class to connect our own community building to continued scientific learning.
