Mrs. Cope from Cincinnati OH is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a set of flatware, cutting boards, and various other kitchen utensils in order to help them learn the value of a proper meal so they're successful beyond the walls of the classroom and learn how to prepare a healthy meal.

You will never meet a nicer, more amazing group of students than the students in my classroom. In spite of having significant learning disabilities and some physical disabilities, the students enjoy learning and being in my classroom. My students are from highly impoverished African-American neighborhoods. Many students come from single-parent homes in which the parent is struggling to make ends meet. 95% of our families are on free lunch. The large majority of our parents have not gone to college, but encourage their children to do well in school and hope that they will have the opportunity to go to school.
Contrary to these difficult circumstances, these students are intelligent and are very eager to learn.
However, without the assistance of teachers and mentors to guide them into learning, they will not be able to receive the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in today's fast past society.
My students lack academic and leadership skills. They are in need of nurturing, modeling and opportunities to practice and learn how to apply all disciplines in real-life situations. Through this project, I hope to provide them with opportunities to grow and develop into future STEAM leaders around the world!
The students in my classroom may struggle academically but they flourish when given the chance to apply the knowledge learned in our lessons to real life experiences. Imagine going beyond high school and are unsure how to properly cook a meal for yourself. What supplies do I need for my kitchen? What do I need to look for at the grocery store to make sure the meal I'm about to eat is healthy for me? How do I read a recipe that I found online for a really good meal? Students in my classroom already have these struggles and they haven't left elementary school yet!
Life skills are some of the most important skills students today aren't always taught in the home.
When students come from lower socio-economical households, parents aren't always there to help set up their children for beyond high school. The ability to use time in the classroom to help the students learn the importance of preparing, cooking and serving basic meals is crucial to their survival.
With the supplies from this project, the students will be able to safely learn how to prepare fresh fruits and vegetables in a variety of ways. The students will be able to use the knives without fear of hurting themselves and have their own "prep stations" at their desks with the cutting boards. They'll also be able to learn how to set up a table with the dishes and silverware. Just as preparations and the cooking are important, so is learning proper ways to clean up. The drying rack and dish pan will allow us to work with the students how to properly work in a kitchen. Wherever the students go in life, my hope is that the skills learned with me will help them succeed on their life path!
