Our elementary school is a Title I school with many students coming from lower income families. Our school has programs for students in preschool through the fifth grade and 56% of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch. It is a vibrant and connected community where all students are valued and encouraged to thrive!
My own classroom serves a group of 11 students with significant disabilities including communication disorders, orthopedic impairment, and autism.
My students come to our school from around the broader district area in order to receive the specialized instruction available in my program.
My Project
Our classroom is a busy place where students work on academic learning just as they would in any elementary class. But the nature of my students' disabilities means that we have plenty of work to do in other areas as well! We work on social skills, life skills, and playing cooperatively with one another.
Having a play kitchen in the classroom is a great way to learn to play together, and to introduce important life skills to students with significant disabilities.
Our current play kitchen has been incredibly well used by students for many years, but in recent months has begun to fall apart completely. The students love the kitchen, but it is now in such a state of disrepair that we can no longer play with it.
Replacing our play kitchen will revitalize a favorite part of the classroom and will give my students renewed opportunities to engage in imaginative and cooperative play with one another. They can begin to lay a foundation for the important learning of life skills they will need to do as students with disabilities, but in an age appropriate and enjoyable way!
