The students in this classroom are children with disabilities that require specialized instruction in creative ways for them to learn. The students love to play, but need instruction on appropriate ways to play and need practice with real-life situations to carryover functional skills they learn. They also love to use play as academic learning opportunities for their annual goals. The students enjoy going out into the community and practicing skills learned in the classroom, socializing with member students of the community, and learning new things about the community they live in.
My Project
Every month of the school year the classroom will have a themed dramatic play area, such as hospital/vet, grocery store, restaurant, construction, etc. The dramatic play area will have embedded writing, reading, math, and social skills opportunities to meet the students’ developmental needs and keep them engaged in learning. The doctor kits and toolkits are needed for the hospital and construction units for dramatic play instruction. The telephone will be used for multiple dramatic play themes to learn how to use a phone, what their phone number is, and how to write phone numbers. The students also stock and maintain a snack shop in the teacher’s lounge to raise money to use for life’s skills community-based field trips. They use the funds to shop for materials, make purchases at a restaurant, and much more. The students practice life skills, social skills, and academic skills while out in the community that they live in. The book cart is for them to organize the snack shop and be able to easily transport it from the classroom to the teachers’ lounge when checking inventory and restocking.
