Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students have a developmental disability that severely effects their learning of basic living skills. They love coming to school every day and learning to do the things that they see their same age peers do. I would love to give them more chances to develop these skills!
I have AWESOME students!
They love coming to school each day and following the school routine! Their favorite lessons are those that involve life skills! These are skills that most of us learn through experience by watching our parents or other adults. My students need a lot of direct instruction and practice to learn these skills! When they finally are able to do some of these skills on their own (order at McDonald's, start a conversation with a peer, etc) they are extremely excited and proud. It is my favorite part of working with these guys, and I'd like to provide them more opportunities to develop these skills! My school is very large, and we do not have the funds to support most of our students with all of their needs.
My Project
My students need a variety of life skills curriculums with instruction on basic cooking practice, social skills, hygiene, and independent living. These resources will allow my students to access the world in a way that most of us learn automatically. My students will be able to complete a ton of different cooking lessons with pictures that show them all of the steps to a recipe. They will participate in social skill lessons that allow them to practice the basic skills that most people do naturally. These are things like making eye contact, or saying hello before starting a conversation. My students love to role play, and work on their skills. I would love to be able to give them more chances to do this with the social skill bundle I am requesting. Another resource that I am requesting is weighted vests for my sensory area. My students often like to feel deep pressure on their bodies. It helps calm them down when they are excited or upset. These vests have shown to help students cope with their issues, and access instruction for longer periods of time.
I have been working extremely hard like all of the other teachers out there trying to help each kid in their room.
These resources will give me a better chance to not just help my students access the school environment, these resources will help them access the world!
