Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are not verbal. We have to encourage them to communicate in different ways. Some of my students are learning to communicate with signs and gestures; other students are learning to communicate with picture exchanges.
For academic learning, I try to do a lot of exploration play.
My students function at the developmental level of two-year-olds or below, so exploration and curiosity are my best tools in education. I want to start allowing my students to have more exploration learning in the area of science, math, and language.
My Project
My students need to be taught different life skills that they do not automatically pick up. In order to teach these skills, I need different tools that help them practice.
The plates, cups and utensils in this project will give my student's access to the tools they need to practice life skills.
The will be able to learn to drink out of a cup, use a fork, or keep their plate on the table. All of these tools will help enrich their life and improve their longterm life skills. Student who can accomplish these feeding task will be more independent for their entire life. They can progress from drinking out of a sippy to cup, to drinking out of a water bottle, to a straw cup and finally an open top cup. All of these tools give them access to learn important life skills.
For feeding skills, the placemats will help give them visual cues of where food and utensils are supposed to be. They can use the utensils to learn how to use a fork, spoon or knife while eating. The can use the step stool to access the sink and learn to wash dishes.
My students also need to learn several dressing skills. They can use the socks to practice putting on shoes and socks. They can use the pants to practice with dressing and to assist them in learning to potty train. The unitards also help teach my students dressing skills. The grocery bags will be used to help teach the students to pick up their clothes and put them in the bags. These life skills will be great tools for my students.
