Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work for one of my district's continuation school program, in other words I work with students who weren't successful in the main stream educational setting. They have been removed (expelled, dropped out, returned from Juvenile Hall etc.) from their previous high schools and come to us because they are determined to finish high school. I teach a combination of science (Bio, Chem, Earth Science and Health) and art, all in one class! Our continuation school has many campuses but I work in South LA with an exclusively low income undeserved student population.
My Project
My students are high schoolers have found themselves in continuation school for a variety of reasons. They are motivated to learn but most have not had positive experiences with school, let alone science and math. While many of them doodle and are naturally artistic, like all young people, they don't have a formal outlet for it. And lastly, these young people are in need of learning many life skills to help the succeed beyond high schools. I have a vision for combining life skills with our science and art learning in my classroom to better engage my students with content as well as teach them skills and knowledge.
While we have access to traditional art supplies I would like to make unique and interesting art projects, which my students would never have the chance to do otherwise, available to them.
Through sewing, knitting and bookbinding we will learn life skills as well as use math skills and explore the chemistry and science behind textiles and fiber.
Clay, glue and railroad board we will use use for modeling science concepts like ecosystems and cell structure.
And through printmaking students will express what they have learned using their own artistic expression and decorate their newly created books, science notebooks, and more.
Thank you for your supports and interest in bringing these opportunities to our school!
