Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Despite the low socioeconomic background and sterotype, most students want to do better. They want to be able to take care of themselves and their families. They want us to be proud of their accomplishments. Middle school provides the forum for these students to build self-management, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills. My students work very hard at transitioning from wrap-around support in elementary to self-sufficiency in middle school. This is a critical step in becoming a productive citizen.
Many of my students need help to develop these skills through organizational activities, classroom responsibilities, and of course hands-on opportunities to exercise scientific approach.
My Project
Currently, I have open shelving units and often students will take other student's belongings because they are so accessible. The IKEA storage container would allow each table to neatly store their lab books and folders, and the caddy insert that fits within the storage container offers a easy way to store that tables supplies (glue, scissors, markers, etc.). Each container has a lid that locks in place, and would prevent from students taking other students supplies.
The intention is to help them build organizational skills while making them more accountable.
Additionally, the students will change lab groups regularly and I'm looking for a creative way to assign them into their groups. Student grouping pencils have multiple ways to do that, and when new groups form, conversation is hard to come by. The conversation ball and foam blocks offers a variety of ways to engage students in whole classroom and group conversation. Lastly, students that are nervous or fidgety can find comfort in manipulating the marble sleeves.
