The cost of plaster wrap and Tempera paint is $513, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I would like to start an after school art club that would be open to any students at our middle school, but I would really like to focus on some our Hispanic, Asian and African American students that are not involved in sports or other aspects of our school due to finances, transportation or language and communication issues. My club would give them hands on experiences with sculpture and mural painting.
The members of the club would learn about the artist George Segal and his life-sized plaster sculptures and Keith Haring and his symbolism. Haring uses simple images rather than the written word to communicate altruistic messages with people all over the world. After learning about these artists I plan to create several plaster sculptures showing students "at work" in typical middle school activities and at least one mural focusing on our school's guiding principles.
I have taught art at Westfield for 18 years and I often have students who are very talented and have a love for art, but once their 12 week rotation is complete they have no opportunities for continuing with their art. I also see kids year after year with nothing to do after school that I think would benefit from an organized activity that would be provided to them without cost.
The materials I would like to have for my kids are fairly basic, but items I can not purchase with my limited art budget. I would need 1-2 manequins, in any condition, that we could wrap in plaster gauze for our sculptures. Preferably one manequin would be a male and one a female. I would also need several cases of plaster gauze wrap. For the mural I need 5 gallons of tempera paint. We already have brushes so those would not be necessary.
As I said earlier, an opportunity for my students to expand their art experiences and also to provide an after school experience for those not very involved in school life is the main purpose of my club. The club would be open to any students who wish to have a fun and enriching experience. Thank you for considering this proposal.
