Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Almost 80% of my students live at the poverty line. Additionally, almost 60% of our students are identified as English learners. Students with identified learning disabilities are mainstreamed into my science classroom. Our students will benefit from engaging hands-on science experiences in the science lab. These experiences will motivate them to pursue course work in science and mathematical fields, as they can see how the two disciplines intersect. I also like to publish their work in color ink, such as graphs, sketches, and computer-based project that build their computer literacy and writing skills.

Some of our students have limited life experiences, living in a metropolitan area.

I'd like to connect them with the world around them through hands-on science experiments. A number of students using the lab have special needs, such as learning difficulties and physical handicaps. Hands-on experiences help solidify their learning.

They have enormous curiosity and a desire to learn. They blossom with hands-on, engaging activities. The A-ha moments we have in the science lab are priceless. Some of my students have special needs and these hands-on experiences really connect the learning for them.

My Project

Compound microscopes with smartphone adapters will allow my students to take pictures of what we see. We plan on visiting the pond nearby and collect water samples to see pond life magnified. This hands-on experience will get them even more excited about science and build curiosity about the world around them.

With these special microscopes, my students can upload their images into Google slides, students work collaboratively to identify the plant and animal life that they have taken images of.

They can then present their findings to the class. This will provide a great opportunity for action research. Students will also exercise their public speaking skills and strengthen their communication skills as they report out their findings.
