My school is located in a high poverty city, Fall River Massachusetts. Almost all of the students here qualify for free or reduced lunch. Parents struggle to keep up with the expenses of books every year. The special education team for grades K-4 is in need of newer age books that cater to the population of older students that are reading below grade level. There are so many great authors out there that create chapter books that students can access that are reading below grade level. Students that are at a strategic reading level are reluctant to read in class because the books that are on their level are "baby books". Unfortunately students either don't read at all during their independent reading time or sit with a grade level book far above their individual reading level. We would love to add these books to our library so students can get the most out of their independent reading and not feel self conscious.
My Project
I know students will be excited with these new titles. My hope is that they will to read these books independently without fear of people knowing they're reading at lower levels on top of increasing their reading fluency. The books are high interest for them and I know they will greatly appreciate this.Some of the great titles include Bad Kitty, Amelia Bedeila, and some nonfiction reader. My students love graphic novel so Bad Guys is sure to be a hit as well.The Dog Man is also a series that the grade 4 students love.
