We live in a small rural community. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and family situations. At school, we serve breakfast along with an after school program with snack and homework help to try to close the gap that can occur with students from a range of backgrounds. My students are passionate readers and compassionate friends. In a world where home lives can be chaotic and messy, school is safe haven. School also needs to be a place to learn how to self regulate when we feel out of control and also a place to learn empathy for others. Literature is a great resource to teach both of these important life skills. Children at this age respond well and connect with great books and the wonderful lessons they teach!
My Project
The books that I would order with the funding of this project show concrete examples that our first graders could relate with, in order to teach those life skills that are so important. My hope is that when we read them aloud and discuss them, the children will clamor to put them in their books boxes in order to read independently later! These books would also be able go home and would be great for "lap time" with parents. My hope is when behavioral issues arise in our classroom, the students would quickly point out what Daisy did, or how Patrick acted or even how to be like Molly Lou Mellon, the characters that have they will come to love in these stories!
