Football is a game of ups and downs, and the ability to overcome adversity often determines the outcome of the game. As a coach, I take every opportunity to include life lessons as I teach the sport. My goal is to provide our players with tools to be successful in life.
During our off-season workouts, we spend time each day reading and discussing various topics to develop life skills.
One of the skills we focus on is leadership. Developing leadership amongst all of our players is a key to overcoming adversity.
Our student body of nearly 170 come together from small, rural communities surrounding the high school. All work and strive to do their best in everything they do. Often resources are not available due to budget constraints to meet the students' needs and provide the support they need. Through this project, I hope to give the students with an additional layer of learning.
My Project
The book, "Chop Wood Carry Water" was introduced to me this past winter. I have read it and know that it would be an excellent book for my football team to read as part of our summer strength and conditioning program. Last fall an assistant coach began a voluntary program of character development, athletes purchased the book on their own and spent time after practice reading together.
After witnessing the response, I decided we would implement the reading and discussion of a book each summer.
As I read the book, "Chop Wood Carry Water" I decided that this book would be one the athletes would enjoy and meet our team goals.
