My students need 20 copies of "The Lemonade Wars" to allow each student a copy of the book as we read the story for a month-long study of character, plot and climax.
My students are from a high poverty area. Most of our chapter books are old and worn out with pages missing or torn. Most of my students are not able to have access to chapter books on a regular basis and are unable to complete a chapter book in the time a library allots them.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch and breakfast at my school.
They are from lower income families who struggle to stay in dress code and to buy school supplies. Most of my students have very few chapter books at home and choose 4-5 books at a time from our school library. They crave chapter books and they are thrilled each time they are read an entire book by their teacher. They would enjoy nothing more than to have their own copy of books we read during class.
My Project
I am requesting twenty two copies of the book "The Lemonade Wars" about a brother and sister who compete. The sister is good at academics, the brother has many friends and is the socializer. When they are put in a class together they have to learn how to get along, how to work together, and how to maximize their strengths. This would be an excellent book for my students to read. They would learn some valuable life lessons about maximizing their strengths and minimizing their weaknesses and about how to use those strengths and weaknesses while working with others in the real world.
This project is extremely important to me.
I believe it holds great lessons for my students while it encourages a life-long love of reading. My boys are so excited to get their hands on chapter books and I strive to capitalize on that while I'm able. My class as a whole would greatly benefit from having these books in their hands and being able to do the activities and lessons together.
