My students have autism and we work in a very structured, organized classroom which gives each student the opportunity to learn and make progress at their own level. The students work on varied independent tasks to promote self management, in addition to specialized 1:1 instruction and table top work which reinforces what is being learned in 1:1. My students are the sweetest group of kids and we spend a lot of time promoting and encouraging social interaction between one another as much as we can on a daily basis. I truly love when I see my students in the morning come off the bus with smiling faces. It lets me know that they are happy and ready to learn!
My Project
The materials and supplies I have requested will help my students become independent with the important life skills of telling time and counting money. My class is a special education classroom with 6 students who have autism. These materials will help them better visualize the concepts of breaking apart numbers to understand place value; as well as give them various ways to learn about telling time and counting money. The magnetic board will be used in both 1:1 and whole class instruction to teach these skills and the puzzles and hands on games will help reinforce these skills when working independently. Additionally, the seat sacks will be used by my students to store their materials since our classroom is rather small.
