Our students come from very low economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our area. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Chuukese, Marshallese, Filipino, Mandarin, and Spanish. As diverse as our students are culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day.
Many of my students receive food bags every other week, which is donated by a local church in our neighborhood. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
Our school serves students in grades K-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and we emphasize the importance of attending college through AVID.
My Project
We have 2 black & white printers for our whole school and 1 color printer (which is always not in working condition). I got my own printer, which I allow my students to use to print their art or writing projects. However, the upkeep on the ink gets expensive throughout the year. We love doing art in my class and I try to incorporate it into all subjects because it brings out the creative side in them that they rarely get to express outside of the classroom. They get so excited when they can print their work in color. We are in the middle of the school year and we are out of ink so I've been printing in black and white and having them color it with crayons. The downside is that it takes them so long because they are trying to be quality producers and it takes away from their learning time, which is a high need for our students.
