Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a preschool classroom for students with autism. I strive to support my ASD students in the classroom as well as their home life. Many of our students are visual learners and benefit from the use of visual supports to foster their independence and academic growth. Visual supports are always more appealing and referenced when they are in color! Some types of visual supports we may use are stories that are geared towards highlighting specific information such as "How to ride a school bus" or “I can use the bathroom”. Other supports may be visuals of the students' favorite characters with ideas on strategies that can support those students in various situations. Sometimes the supports are choice boards, first ____ then ____, or visual schedules. The options and variety are endless with ink for our printer!
These customized visual supports will be used in school and for home consistency & generalization.
After supports are introduced in school, they are sent home for the parents to have a copy and use in the home. This keeps routines and strategies consistent and familiar across all environments. We laminate these supports so they are more durable for little hands and high use.
Please help me help my students, their teachers and their families by enabling us to create social, emotional, and academic supports that can be consistently used in the class and at home.
