My students are 6/7/8th graders attending a public middle school in Oakland, CA. Over half of my students have recently come to America and speak little to no English. Another large chunk of my students are deaf and hard of hearing or have other learning differences (special education). Some of the other students significantly struggle with engaging with school in the traditional way.
My students love coming into class and getting straight to work when they are excited to do the tasks.
What I am working on is integrating language skills as well as access to many learning styles without as many verbal requirements. Your gift can help one of the most diverse groups of students around access interesting topics and skills.
My Project
In history class we are coming up on our medieval Islam unit. I try to integrate art forms from the cultures that students are studying. The prevalence and influence of Islamic mosaic work is a window into history and into craftsmanship. Students will be creating small mosaics and paintings that represent their lives and their beliefs. Throughout much of history many cultures have used mosaic to show every facet of life. We will get a chance to do the same thing.
My students will be able to create an enduring image of their lives.
Many of my students do not get a chance to connect with and create something enduring. I believe that pushing craftsmanship via hard work is one of the most important experiences students can have.
