Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of 12 special needs students at a title 1 school. About one-third of them are coded Other Heath Impaired due to various seizure disorders. About one-third are coded intellectually disabled. Two of them are coded autistic. Most have multiple codings that include speech. My two youngest are in first grade and the oldest is in fifth grade. I typically will have the same students multiple years. I have students from when they enter the Life Skills program until they enter sixth grade. Each of my students has their own education plan as well as working on the prerequisite skills for their appropriate grade level TEKS.
While some people tend to focus on all the things my students can't do, I prefer to remind the students of all they can do and address what they can't do YET in small steps.
I have two wonderful assistants that help me as I address the many needs of my students, or kids. This is the second year I have taught this type of unit and we have seen phenomenal growth. The students communicate their desire to learn in various ways, but they're consistent about wanting to increase their knowledge.
My Project
My students are typically more successful learning with hands-on activities. When they begin "playing" with materials, it is not too long before they "discover" what all they can do. When they discover what the material can be used for, they are ready to begin looking for to ways to apply what they have learned.
The STEM kit Science Stations - K-Gr.
1 - Complete Set, I have requested will enable the students to explore properties of magnets, the attributes of objects that sink or float, and motion and how we can use it. These are difficult concepts for my students to grasp, but having materials readily available and time for them to explore as "reward" time will provide a jump start to learning.
