Our speech and language students at our school are some of the most motivated students I have worked with in my 7 years working so far. We are a dual language school with Chinese which is a very special program to be a part of. Students have exposure to both English and Chinese throughout the day. Many of our students are English Language Learners and school is their only exposure to the English language. In addition, we have many students from low income and low socio-economic status families from the neighborhood.
Our students have not had the same life experiences and exposure to culture that you and I have had.
Because of this, they exhibit a very limited vocabulary and have great difficulty with their literacy skills and verbal expression. Skills that we take for granted when reading a book, website, email, newspaper can be extremely difficult for my students. However, my students love to learn and are such hard workers, the smiles on their faces when they feel they are making progress is priceless! They have so many dreams and aspirations to be successful in their school careers but just need the right tools, resources, and life experiences.
My Project
Having a color printer and the ink needed for the printer will help me provide my students with visuals, real pictures with details, and various resources/organizers to aid in their language and literacy skills. A color printer may seem simple to us but it will go so far with my students!
Many of my students are visual learners and not having a printer at our fingertips proves to be difficult to aid in their understanding of concepts.
Our students have not had exposure to many life experiences living in an urban city. Their families lack resources to provide them with these experiences due to them being first generation Americans, strong language barrier, or funding.
