My English classes are filled with 9th and 10th graders who sometimes need more than standard lessons can provide. I teach a diverse group of learners in a high poverty school in southern Louisiana. Many of my students face issues that are incomprehensible to their teachers.
My students would certainly benefit from simple touches that would make them more comfortable and fed.
They need a little extra because they have so much less. My goal is for all students to feel cared for and safe while at school.
My Project
Deodorant, toothbrushes, snacks, and feminine hygiene items are all essential to a comfortable school day, but so many times my students are lacking these in their home.
Students build relationships with teachers that resemble family.
Outsiders may say why not go to the counselor or social worker--why would you ask your teacher for these personal care items? Well, it's simple. Students and teachers build that connection that feels like home from day one.
When students have a full stomach and feel good about themselves, they will perform and perform well. Sometimes school has to reach into the home and/or community to make it all work.
