Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom is filled with adolescent energy. Students are asking questions, seeking my approval and glad to be in a room that is warm and dry. Though many students come from backgrounds not having life's essential comforts, for fifty minutes each day they are comfortable in class.
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from all different backgrounds.
They speak different languages (mostly Spanish), have different learning styles but they all wear the same school uniform each day. The student population is 69.6% Hispanic or Latino, 14% are black or African American, 88.5% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, 55.7% are English Learners and 16.5% are students with disabilities.
Most of the students are clean, bright faced, happy 6th-8th graders with the same concerns and interests of other students their age even if they come from backgrounds that barely have life’s essentials. Some students are homeless, some in foster homes and some students come from very caring families as well, dealing with financial stress. It's a mix of students that works well and provides a very diverse and rich student population. They are kids, generally resilient and tough. I enjoy teaching them, they are challenging, surprising, creative and very rewarding to teach.
My Project
I requested new warm hats and warm sock/slippers in different colors that I see them using in this cold weather. I requested as much as I could so as many students as possible could get something extra.
I know if you don’t have enough money you don’t spend it on heating bills but pile on clothes. Students bring blankets to school and wear them though I make sure my room is always warm in the winter. I requested the bare essentials: shampoo; nail clippers, deodorant and hair shampoo - life essentials that if it came to choices these might be things that are extra though essential and will make students feel better about themselves and happier and do better at school.
I requested a first aid kit because I know from experience that some students get band aids from my supply at school. I am hoping that this project will get funded in time for when we pass out turkeys and canned food that have been donated to the students' families for the holidays.
Holidays are a hard time of year for students at this school and they act up more this time of year and get in trouble.
Being warm at home, having life essentials in a small way will make them happier, more comfortable, and less hostile and angry at the world for not taking care of them. It’s a small gesture but better to make the gesture than not at all. The socks and hats will make them warmer and they are bright and colorful.
