Mrs. Blanks from Dayton OH is requesting materials related to food, clothing & hygiene through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need essential items like snacks and laundry detergent to help them focus on things in their control and not focus on things out of their control, like empty pantries at home.

Each one of our students receives free breakfast and lunch here at our school, but many times, it's not enough to fill the growing stomach of these active boys and girls! Despite the hardships that may make up their daily lives, they are amazing! Creative, hardworking, eager to learn; each of them brings something different to the table. They have a thirst for knowledge that comes from their different worlds and I am bound to give it to them and expose them to new worlds! Let's be honest: when you're physically hungry, even just a little, it can be hard to focus on a task at hand. Their health really is their wealth and it directly impacts the quality of their learning. These students are hungry for knowledge and for the tools they need to change the world for the better, and I can't let not having tools and resources stand in their way!
Results show that 73 percent of teachers said they regularly instruct hungry students who don’t have enough to eat at home, and 87 percent of principals said they consistently see hungry students in school. As a result of such pervasive hunger, teachers spend nearly $40 a month buying food for kids out of pocket, the survey found. I know this reality all too well.
When students are hungry, they aren't completely powered on to learn!
It's like they can see the bright light, but through a blocking haze. Having various quick snacks and meal items, including apple juice, assorted cereals, cookies, instant soup and chocolate kisses on hand helps me to be able to provide a quick pick me up package to provide to a student who is so focused on hunger, that they can't quite finish an equation or text analysis. These packs can go home and help students have something to eat at home with little or no preparation needed.
These items will help students who experience homelessness to have the tools needed to launder their clothes and create snack packs to take with them in the afternoon and on the weekends.
Being able to provide a clean uniform shirt to a child in need or a cereal breakfast to an empty stomach helps students focus on what's important and not things out of their control! You may not be able to go home with my students, but your support and kindness will go home with them through these life essential packs. Students will be able to create take-home packs for themselves in order to have something to eat when school hours are over.
