My students need tissues, hand soap, and cleaning supplies to learn how to take care of themselves and their belongings. They also need academic and play based activities to take home to take home to enhance learning!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Our classroom is their safe place, where they come every day to escape from some harsh realities they live in at home. They bring so much joy into my life and I want them to know how much I believe in their ability to do anything they put their mind to!
I teach in Camden, NJ, ranked one of the most dangerous and deadliest cities in America.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, and some of them don't see a meal until they come into school the next morning. They have many hardships for such a young age, but they still try hard, every single day, to be the best they can be. Our curriculum uses teaching guides, that follow hands-on studies, that are relevant to children’s daily lives. Through studies, which are hands-on, project-based investigations, I am building children’s confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills and promoting positive outcomes.
My Project
This proposed project will help provide students in my classroom with everyday basic necessities that they don’t have. There are several homeless and high poverty families within my classroom that come to school without being prepared. Several of them rely on school just to provide them with a meal, and a safe place to be. The request is for items such as food to send home with them to assist with the lack of food or tissues when they are sick. Some of the others are items that are necessary to help with hygiene and assist with teaching cleanliness, like hand soap, Clorox wipes, and baby wipes. These are all things that many people have as basic needs and on a regular basis, but for many of my families they are luxuries. I also am requesting some basic family activities that parents or family members can enhance learning at home. Some families struggle with how to support their child and these materials have easy instructions and a fun activity to go along with math and literacy. This project will address the urgent needs of the students by providing materials so they can come to school with self-confidence, equipped to learn and set up for success.
